AERIAL AMERICA 1 Season 2014 North America

I've never been to Oregon, but I bought it so that my husband could see it over and over again, because he wants to go to a specific runner's event held there in 2015.

I love all the states I've seen on Aerial America. Truly, this series has a unique point of view. And although they can't tell everything about a state in the time allotted, they cover quite a bit, from manufacturing, history, education, and government. Anything unique and interesting about the state - including famous events and people who are part of the land.

I've been watching nature documentaries for decades now, so I approach these newer ones with weary skepticism, especially since the wave of glossy 'remake-upgrades' started by Planet Earth. In this specific case, the topic is the wildlife of Africa, which has been covered in almost every major BBC documentary so far, as well as hundreds of other docs, and it has also been the focus of the very good 'Wild Africa' series (also by the BBC).

The one detail with 'Africa' that gave me hope was that it was produced by Mike Gunton, producer of arguably the best of the new breed of documentaries: 'Life'.

I am happy to report that this one is just as good as Life, if not better.

The approach here is to find footage of surprising, educational and entertaining animal behaviour not seen before and film it in dramedy style as with Life. In addition, the documentary masterfully combines summary information on the natural history and climate to provide a complete picture of nature and wildlife in each habitat as an integrated whole.

A typical scene in this series will describe the available food in a region and the challenges specific to that habitat, then introduce a native animal cast, and film a little dramatic, unusual, surprising or funny sequence, such as monster armoured crickets with poison blood attacking baby birds, or a lizard sneaking up on sleeping lions to eat the flies off its face.

If you ever walked in nature, you should know about these moments when you observe animals you already know doing something surprising. Well this series is like a condensed compilation of these moments, some thrilling, some sad, some very amusing. And this is backed by carefully chosen music and narrative to enhance the drama or comical aspects.

North America America Unearthed 2 Seasons 2014

I thought it was odd after doing a thorough family history search on this area (Rockwall) that I had not heard a word about the 'mysterious' rock wall.

Well.. this is yet one more History Channel hour long, dragged out special. Bottom line and SPOILER ALERT: Wall is Not man made, it's geologically formed. But hey.. they COULD HAVE told me that in a few seconds. That would have saved me an hour of my time.

I was pretty suspicious when half way through, they spent several minutes boring me to death showing the host learn how to run a big digging machine. I figured at that point they were hard up to fill air time.

Don't bother. Save your time and money.

North America 1 Season

After watching the first episode I think this series is off to a great start. I am happy Discovery Channel is still supporting scenery & nature documentaries instead of just reality TV stuff. Considering the advancement in recording technology I hope there will be more series like this one produced in the future. Some of these animals and scenery might not look the same or be around 20-30 years down the road.

I think all of the people complaining about the lack of academic level detail and scholarship in this series are missing the point. This 12 episode series is a really fantastic overview of American History. Oftentimes when we study history in school, through long, detailed books, over the course of several months, we tend to lose the forest for the trees. This medium of learning has it's place, watching this series you get a feel through a quick succession of stories, as to how America began and developed over the last two and a half centuries. What it lacks in "legitimate" scholarship it more than makes up for by it's production quality, compelling story-telling and entertainment. Another thing to note is the populist perspective of the series. Most history textbooks and academics focus too heavily on the actions of political leaders, but this series is truly about the "story of us" as indicated by its title. I was surprised to find that there was almost no discussion about the writing of the constitution, not much talk about the Presidents and the legislation they pushed through or the policies they enacted. Instead, the series incorporates a lot of anecdotes and stories of people and movements that shaped the course of this country, from the Chinese immigrants who built the railroads to the construction workers who built New York City, to historic figures like Frederick Douglas, Harriet Tubman and Andrew Carnegie. If I were a school teacher I would show my students this entire series at the beginning of each year, if for nothing else but to pique their interest in history and what they're about to learn in greater detail over the course of the term.
